Make a ContributionA woman is dead and a man was injured after a house fire early Wednesday morning in Bethesda, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer told Bethesda Today.
Piringer said Wednesday morning that he did not have the names or ages of the house fire victims but noted they were “long time” residents. Montgomery County police will also conduct a death investigation related to the fire, Piringer said.
Around 1:45 a.m., county fire crews were dispatched to the 9100 block of Charred Oak Drive for the report of a house fire with people trapped in the home, Piringer wrote in a social media post on Wednesday. When firefighters arrived, they encountered “heavy fire” throughout the home, according to Piringer.
“It was very challenging, very tough environment,” Piringer told Bethesda Today.

Shortly after fire crews arrived, they located the man in the home and rescued him, but the woman was still inside, Piringer said. The man was later transported to an area hospital in stable condition.
Firefighters searched for the woman in the home “aggressively and exhaustively” for about 30 minutes, according to Piringer. The woman was found on the first floor of the home and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A responding firefighter also was injured after the house fire, Piringer said, and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to Piringer.

MCFRS crews will return to the Bethesda neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon to conduct an “After the Fire” safety campaign to discuss fire safety and check smoke alarms.
The blaze is the second fatal fire to occur in the county this month. On April 3, Karen Elsa Carstens, 55, died in Chevy Chase house fire.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
