A woman died and a man was hospitalized following a house fire in Chevy Chase early Friday morning, according to Montgomery County police and fire and rescue service officials.
The identity of the woman will be released following the proper notification of the next of kin, county police said Friday morning.
Around 5:45 a.m. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews were dispatched to the 4700 block of Merivale Road in the Brookdale neighborhood, MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said Friday morning in a video on social media.

The location of the home is in the Friendship Heights and Chevy Chase area, near the Brookdale Neighborhood Park. The house is near the corner of Westport and Marivale roads.
When firefighters arrived, the blaze could be seen from outside the home, and there were “heavy smoke conditions,” Piringer said. The fire had extended to all floors, including the basement, by the time crews had arrived.
According to Piringer, a man in the home was able to escape, but a woman was not. Firefighters located the woman inside the home and brought her out. Resuscitation efforts were ultimately not successful.
“Unfortunately, that person did not survive although the best efforts of paramedics on the scene,” Piringer said in the video.

MCFRS crews transported the man to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries due to smoke inhalation, according to Piringer.
The blaze is believed to have originated in the basement and later spread to all levels of the house, causing “extensive” damage, Piringer said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
As of 8:30 a.m., the fire had been extinguished. Piringer noted that about 80 MCFRS firefighters responded to the blaze, including hazardous materials crews.
Montgomery County police also responded to the house fire. Police will release more information about the fatal incident as it becomes available, spokesperson Degan Bartels told Bethesda Today on Friday morning.
