Virtual food hall chain Wonder to open in Gaithersburg Aug. 13

Wonder, a virtual food hall that offers menus from a variety of restaurants and cuisines, is set to open its next Montgomery County location in Gaithersburg on Aug. 13, according to a press release from the company.

The new location is the Kentlands Market Square shopping center at 295 Kentlands Blvd., home to restaurants including Andy’s Pizza, Java Nation and Vasili’s Kitchen.

Wonder’s Aug. 13 opening at 10:30 a.m. will mark the eatery’s second location in the county. The company, which describes itself as a “mealtime platform,” has one other location in North Bethesda at 12240 Rockville Pike.

The fast-growing company has opened dozens of locations across the mid-Atlantic since its launch in 2018 with locations in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C. There are eight locations in Maryland with more to come, including two in Montgomery County, at Burtonsville Crossing and Germantown’s Neelsville Village Center, according to leasing brochures for the properties. Wonder also has a location in the District’s Friendship Heights neighborhood.

At the Aug. 13 opening in Gaithersburg, the first 100 orders of $10 or more will receive a swag bag. In addition, there will be a ribbon-cutting at the restaurant to celebrate the opening.

According to the release, the Gaithersburg Wonder will offer dishes from more than 20 restaurants and cuisines, including Tejas Barbecue, Streetbird by Marcus Samuelsson and Magnolia Bakery.

“The new location offers a flexible, family-friendly option for everything from weeknight dinners to group gatherings,” Wonder said in its release.

The concept behind Wonder is providing mealtime flexibility, according to the company’s website. Using Wonder’s app or a kiosk inside the restaurant, one can order meals and dishes from a variety of restaurants and cuisines, including tacos, salads, steak, pasta and sandwiches.

Wonder’s mission is to reenvision the traditional restaurant and mealtime experience by utilizing the latest technology, such as delivery drones in New Jersey and food preparation robots, according to the company’s website. The restaurant partners with well-known chefs and restaurants to prepare meal kits for all dishes offered on the platform. Those kits are then cooked to order in a kitchen at each eatery.

Wonder also uses Infinite Kitchen technology, an automated robot food assembly system that was developed by Sweetgreen and later acquired by Wonder, to prepare its dishes.

“From recipe development to delivery, we own, develop and leverage the latest technology to bring great food to more communities while entirely changing the underlying economics of food,” Wonder states on its website.

Wonder is expected to continue to grow across the U.S. According to Restaurant Dive, Wonder is preparing for an initial public offering in the coming year or two. In July, the company, a food technology firm that owns Blue Apron and Grubhub, announced that it had raised more than $650 million in funding and was valued at $9 billion.
