The Food Market, an American restaurant specializing in “playful” comfort foods, is anticipated to open an outpost in downtown Bethesda this May, according to chef and owner Chad Gauss.
The eatery, which has locations in Baltimore and Columbia, will be on the ground floor of Hampden House at 4700 Hampden Lane. The building is a new, 25-story, mixed-use apartment building fronting Wisconsin Avenue.
The Food Market’s Bethesda location will be the restaurant’s third in Maryland. Gauss also operates a Latin-inspired restaurant called La Food Marketa in Pikesville, Maryland, a snowball stand in Baltimore and a catering operation called Hoopla.
According to Gauss, The Food Market offers a wide array of American cuisine with menu options he describes as “down to earth, approachable food that we take seriously.”

Popular menu items at the eatery’s other locations include Amish soft pretzels, cheesesteak steam buns, the “beets by chad” salad, spaghetti and crab meatballs and pickle-brined fried chicken, Gauss said.
The Food Market in Bethesda will offer brunch, lunch and dinner, according to Gauss. In addition, the restaurant is expected to serve alcoholic drinks such as beer, wine and liquor and is scheduled to go before the county’s Board of License Commissioners on April 9 for a liquor license hearing.
Bethesda has been a destination for Gauss since an original business investor suggested the area 14 years ago.
“As we’ve grown, our company size has gotten larger to where I think that we have the bandwidth and the company love to be able to sustain a market that’s outside of our personal neighborhood,” Gauss said.

He noted that Bethesda feels “welcoming, friendly, clean and approachable” and a place where he saw The Food Market brand fit well.
The new restaurant will be located on the ground floor at the back of the Hampden House building and face a small plaza near the intersection of Hampden and East lanes. According to Gauss, the restaurant will seat up to 100 people in the dining room and there will be an additional 16 seats at the bar and 40 seats on the covered, outdoor dining patio.
Hampden House is one of two prominent high-rise apartment buildings along Wisconsin Avenue that were completed in late 2025. The buildings are situated next to each other at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Hampden Lane.

Daily Provisions heading to The Charles
Daily Provisions, a New York City-based restaurant and café chain, is planning a location in downtown Bethesda, Taylor Herrick, a public relations representative for the restaurant, confirmed to Bethesda Today on Wednesday.

Herrick said that there were no other details to provide about the new restaurant and opening timeline.
The Bethesda outpost will be the café chain’s first location in Maryland and second in the Washington, D.C. area. In August, the chain opened a location in D.C.’s Dupont Circle neighborhood. The chain also operates nine other locations in New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.
Daily Provisions offers a range of dishes, including bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches and avocado toast for breakfast; baked goods and sweets such as a Key Lime Pie Cruller and everything croissant; sandwiches, salads and soups; and main dishes such as whole roasted chicken and seared salmon, according to its menu.
In addition to food, the eatery also offers coffee and tea drinks, wine, espresso martinis, beer and house-made lemonade, according to the menu. Specialty beverages such as an iced salted caramel matcha latte and matcha lemonade are also available.
A commercial real estate listing for The Charles notes that the 26-story building features a nearly 3,300-square-foot restaurant space, and that construction of the restaurant shell was expected to be complete in February.
