Silver Spring’s longstanding basement dive bar Quarry House Tavern is now offering a new happy hour special featuring chicken wings priced at 50 cents each, according to a press release from Goodbar Restaurant Group.

The deal, dubbed “Micro Happy Hour” by the restaurant group that owns the tavern, will run from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Silver Spring bar and includes any choice of sauce for the wings.

A typical basket of 12 wings at the tavern costs $23.50, according to the menu of the bar and eatery at 8401 Georgia Ave.

Micro Happy Hour is Goodbar Restaurant Group’s attempt to restore the original meaning of happy hour, with drinks and food priced significantly lower than regular menu prices, while also acknowledging that some patrons may be facing economic hardships, according to the press release.

“These days, it seems happy hours have lost their charm and going out comes at the casual cost of a mortgage,” the restaurant group said. The new happy hour aims to fix that issue with “insane prices” offered only during a short window of time.

The micro happy hour concept also is offered at the restaurant group’s other eateries, including Charley Chesapeake Chophouse (formerly Charley Prime Foods) in Gaithersburg, as well as El Chucho, Bar Charley and Little Coco’s in Washington, D.C.

“We’ve been through a lot together – the city, our regulars, our staff,” Jackie Greenbaum, co-owner of the restaurant group and Quarry House Tavern said in the release. “There are ebbs and flows. Right now people are stretched thin and we have the ability to do something real about it, even if it’s just for a couple hours a day. So we are.”

At Charley Chesapeake Chophouse at 9811 Washingtonian Blvd. in the Rio Lakefront, Micro Happy Hour offerings include a daily “progressive oyster hour.” Starting at 2 p.m., a single fresh oyster costs 50 cents. At 5 p.m., the price increases to $2 per oyster.

Sprinkles Potomac ice cream shop to close end of June

Sprinkles, a staple ice cream shop in Potomac, will be closing at the end of June following more than 35 years of serving scoops in the community, according to the eatery’s social media posts.

The dessert shop at 10148 River Road has operated in the Potomac Place Shopping Center since 1989, according to the Sprinkles website. The shopping strip is home to Vie de France Bakery & Café, Duke’s Grocery and the Market at River Falls. Italian restaurant Maurizio’s is slated to open there this summer in the former home of Renato’s.

Sprinkles announced its closing May 31 in a letter shared to its social media pages, signaling the “end of an era,” the posts said.

The letter, signed by the Sprinkles management, cited rising costs and declining business conditions as the main reasons behind the closure.

“We have been trying for some time to find a way to keep it open but have reached the point where we simply are not in a position to continue to operate it,” the letter said.

During its final weeks of operation, Sprinkles plans to offer discounts on its offerings, according to the letter.

“Thank you … for the years of delightful moments with your family, friends and pets. We will miss you all,” the letter said.

Playa Bowls, a national smoothie bowl and juice chain originally from New Jersey, is slated to move into the Sprinkles space, according to the letter. The chain has another Potomac location at 7733 Tuckerman Lane as well as locations in Darnestown, Olney, Kensington, Chevy Chase and Burtonsville.

Honeygrow eyes a fall opening in Silver Spring

Honeygrow, a Philadelphia-based fast-casual chain offering stir-fries, salads and healthy dessert bowls, is slated to open its new location in Silver Spring this fall, a public relations representative Katie Dinsmore for the eatery told Bethesda Today on Wednesday.

Bethesda Today previously reported that Honeygrow had initially planned to open the Silver Spring location this summer. Dinsmore did not provide a reason for the delay.

Honeygrow’s new Silver Spring outpost will be at 10741 Columbia Pike in the Shoppes of Burnt Mill shopping center. It is opening in the former space of California Tortilla and will join Trader Joe’s and Starbucks, among other retailers.

The chain operates one other location in Montgomery County in Rockville’s Montrose Crossing shopping center. The upcoming Silver Spring location will be the chain’s 14th in Maryland, according to the eatery’s website.

Honeygrow’s stir-fries, salads and dessert bowls can be customized with a variety of vegetables, proteins and sauces. Honeygrow also sells packages of uncooked noodles, sauces and dressings and offers a kids menu.
