A Silver Spring man was convicted of second-degree murder Wednesday in Washington, D.C., Superior Court in connection with a 2022 hit-and-run crash near the White House that killed a pedestrian and seriously injured another, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia said in a Wednesday statement.

Spiro Stafilatos, 38, was also convicted of one charge of aggravated assault while armed and fleeing related to the Dec. 30, 2022, crash that killed Shuyu Sui and injured Jiahui Wang. The statement did not say where Sui and Wang resided.

Stafilatos is scheduled to be sentenced June 25, according to the statement.

Stafilatos’ attorney, Brian McDaniel, did not immediately respond Thursday morning to Bethesda Today’s request for comment on the conviction.

According to prosecutors, the crash occurred around 4:28 p.m. near the 700 block of 14th Street NW. Uniformed U.S. Secret Service officers on bicycles noticed that the dark-colored Buick LeSabre that Stafilatos was driving was missing a front license plate and displayed a Maryland rear tag that lacked a registration sticker.

Officers followed the vehicle onto G Street NW and later stopped along the 700 block of 15th Street NW after a passenger exited the car. A records check showed the Maryland tag was registered to a 2016 Chevrolet, not the Buick Stafilatos was driving, prosecutors said.

As officers approached and asked for Stafilato for his driver’s license, they noticed what appeared to be an open beer container inside the vehicle, according to court documents. Officers instructed him to put the car in park after noticing it remained in drive during the stop.

Instead, prosecutors said, Stafilatos sped away northbound on 15th Street NW before turning onto New York Avenue NW. Investigators said he drove into an intersection against a red light, where the Buick collided with another vehicle that had the right of way.

The impact caused the Buick to spin and strike two pedestrians crossing nearby in a crosswalk, according to the statement.

Both victims were taken to local hospitals. Sui later died at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Wang was treated at George Washington University Hospital for injuries to her head and body, according to the statement.

Stafilatos was taken to Howard University Hospital complaining of head and back pain. Authorities said he has remained in custody since the crash.

According to court records, this was not Stafilatos’ first conviction. In 2020, he was convicted of robbing a gas station in Silver Spring, Maryland, and received a three-year prison sentence that was suspended in favor of probation.
