Silver Branch Brewing Co. is slated to open a new brewery in downtown Wheaton with preliminary plans of launching in mid- to late summer of 2027, according to CEO and co-founder Christian Layke.

The new location of the Silver Spring-based brewery is expected to be in ground-floor retail space within the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s headquarters at 2425 Reedie Drive. The 14-story building is owned by the commission and is home to several Montgomery County agencies.

Layke noted Thursday night in an email to Bethesda Today that the brewery has yet to sign the lease on the more than 7,000-square-foot space because he and his co-owners are waiting for a finalized construction contract.

Like Silver Branch’s Rockville outpost at 7301 Calhoun Place that opened in late May, the Wheaton space will host a taproom and Mosaic Pizza. The new location will also feature an outdoor beer garden across from the Marian Fryer Town Plaza.

Layke told Bethesda Today on Friday that it is “exciting” to be opening another location in the county.

“It feels really good,” he said. “It feels like, say, an affirmation of the fact that the Silver Spring community and the Montgomery County community more broadly have really embraced us.”

The Wheaton location will be the company’s fourth and third in the county. The brewery opened its first location in 2019 at 8401 Colesville Road in downtown Silver Spring. Silver Branch also opened a location in Warrenton, Virginia, in 2023 that is currently closed due to a fire, but in the process of reopening, Layke said.

Once the lease is signed for the Wheaton space, the brewery plans to move forward with developing a design, applying for local construction permits and then building its new “large” space, Layke said. He noted construction is expected to “take a long time” because the space is unfinished.

Silver Branch Brewing Co. is known for its in-house brews, such as Dr. Juicy IPA, Glass Castle Pilsner and Cloud Nine Wheat Ale, with flavors ranging from citrus and tangy fruit to banana and clove. Its taproom also offers a variety of cocktails, wines and ciders.

The brewery’s food menu at the Wheaton taproom is expected to include chicken wings, sandwiches, salads, nachos and a giant Bavarian pretzel, according to its menu. Mosaic Pizza offers 12- and 16-inch pizza pies, salads and sandwiches.

In addition to beer and pizza, Silver Branch’s Wheaton location will feature a dedicated events space, according to Layke.

“The county said it was interested in an events space that could complement their need to hold hearings and other meetings. The space would also offer private and business event opportunities like we do in both our Silver Spring and our Rockville locations,” Layke wrote in the email.

Layke confirmed Friday that the announcement of the brewery’s new location does not signal the closure of the original location in downtown Silver Spring. In fact, he said, the brewery has plans to remain long-term with a lease that was extended until 2040.
