Eight adults and one child were displaced from their Rockville residence after an electrical fire caused significant damage to their single-family home Sunday afternoon, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Around 4:15 p.m. Sunday, MCFRS crews were dispatched to a fire at a house in the 400 block of North Horners Lane, Piringer said in a video posted on social media Sunday. Initial reports of the blaze described “thick, black smoke coming from the home,” Piringer said.

When MCFRS crews arrived, the occupants of the home and their pets had escaped from the burning house, according to Piringer. Shortly after, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

“The fire was basically knocked down pretty quickly, but there were some hot spots that got into some concealed areas of this home, so pretty significant damage,” Piringer said in the video.

Some of the residents were evaluated by MCFRS crews for injuries following the fire, according to Piringer. However, none of the injuries were considered to be serious and no residents were transported to a local hospital.

According to Piringer, smoke alarms in the home alerted residents to the fire, allowing them to escape.

County fire investigators determined the fire originated in a bedroom and extended throughout the structure, according to Piringer. The cause of the blaze was also determined to be accidental and “electrical in nature,” Piringer said.

The blaze resulted in around $400,000 in damage to the home, according to Piringer. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.
