Long before it became home to one of Montgomery County’s most recognized hotels, Pooks Hill was a place where people gathered during pivotal moments in history. In 1927, publisher Merle Thorpe acquired more than 150 acres along Rockville Pike and built a Tudor-style estate known as Pook’s Hill, inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s Puck of Pook’s Hill. During World War II, the estate became an unexpected center of international significance when Crown Princess Märtha of Norway and her children found refuge there while Europe was engulfed in conflict.

The property became a gathering place for diplomats, leaders, and dignitaries, and Princess Märtha’s close friendship with President Franklin D. Roosevelt helped make Pooks Hill a quiet backdrop to moments of global importance. Even then, the estate’s greatest purpose was simple: bringing people together.

At Cooper’s Mill Restaurant and throughout the hotel’s banquet operation, culinary teams prepare approximately 90 percent of menu offerings from scratch using fresh, minimally processed ingredients whenever possible. Local sourcing plays an important role in the kitchen’s philosophy, supporting regional farmers and producers while reducing environmental impact.

That commitment to freshness starts with Executive Chef Jesus Reyes, whose passion for ingredients extends beyond the kitchen. Chef Reyes grows his own peppers and uses them to create signature hot sauces made in-house, bringing a personal touch and authentic flavor to the dining experience. It’s the kind of hands-on craftsmanship that reflects Cooper’s Mill’s dedication to quality and creativity.

Of course, every memorable meal begins with a great cocktail. At Cooper’s Mill, guests are welcomed by a bar program led by Zobair, a 41-year associate of Marriott, whose talent behind the bar earned him Marriott International’s prestigious Masters of the Craft championship for handcrafted cocktails. His innovative creations combine technical skill with a flair for hospitality, setting the stage for an exceptional dining experience before the first course even arrives.

Guests notice the difference. From business breakfasts and wedding receptions to private dinners and Sunday brunches, menus are designed around seasonality, freshness, and authentic flavor rather than convenience. Whether enjoying a meal in Cooper’s Mill Restaurant or attending a gala for hundreds of guests, diners experience food and beverages that reflect the agricultural richness and culinary creativity of the Mid-Atlantic region.

The hotel’s longstanding relationship with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals continues each summer through Marriott’s National Root Beer Float Day fundraising efforts. Willard and Alice Marriott, whose hospitality journey began with a small root beer stand in Washington, D.C., and today helps generate support for children’s healthcare programs in local communities.

The spirit of service also takes many other forms. Team members volunteer with Nourish Now to help address food insecurity throughout Montgomery County. They participate in Potomac watershed cleanup efforts to support environmental stewardship. This fall, the hotel will again partner with local neighborhood organizations to support a community vaccination clinic, helping residents access important healthcare services close to home.
