Montgomery County police are investigating the death of a 37-year-old woman found in a Gaithersburg apartment on Sunday morning as a homicide, the department said Monday morning in a news release.

No suspect information was available, police said. The release did not identify the woman.

Just before 8:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to the apartment after receiving a report of a “working code” in the 8500 block of Snouffer School Road, police said in the release. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews also were dispatched to the apartment.

A working code is an Emergency Medical Services term used to describe a situation in which a patient may be in cardiac arrest or unresponsive and resuscitation efforts are needed.

The area where the homicide occurred is near the Montgomery County Airpark and Gaithersburg’s Flower Hill neighborhood.

Responding officers found the woman in the apartment suffering from trauma to her upper body, police said. The release did not provide details on the type of trauma or what may have caused it.

Despite lifesaving measures attempted by the officers, the woman was pronounced dead when MCFRS crews arrived, police said.

The woman was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

The department’s Major Crime Division Homicide Units is leading the investigation into the woman’s death, according to the release. More information about the incident, including the woman’s identity, will be released upon the proper notification of the next of kin.

This is the ninth homicide to occur in the county in 2026. Most recently, county police are investigating the homicide of Hilde Henderson, 67, of Silver Spring, who was found dead by police inside her downtown Silver Spring apartment on May 26. Police have arrested and charged Henderson’s daughter and her daughter’s girlfriend in connection with the case.
