Montgomery County police identified 61-year-old Hanna Wegayehou of Silver Spring as the woman who died Friday afternoon in a hit-and-run collision at Crestmoor Drive and Colesville Road, the department announced Monday in a press release.

The collision occurred just before 1:15 p.m. between the Four Corners intersection of University Boulevard and Colesville Road and the Burnt Mills shopping center on Colesville Road.

An investigation determined Wegayehou was struck by a black SUV while crossing Crestmoor Drive, which serves as an entrance into Silver Spring’s Woodmoor neighborhood.

Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews were dispatched at 1:14 p.m. to the 10500 block of Colesville Road after receiving a report of a pedestrian struck, according to police.

First responders found Wegayehou in the road in critical condition and despite life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead, police said.

The speed limit on that stretch of Colesville Road is 40 mph. There are bus stops on both sides of the six-lane road at Crestmoor Drive. Police did not say where Wegayehou was walking to or from, or in what direction she was walking.

The driver of the striking vehicle left the scene and remains at large. Detectives believe the vehicle is a black SUV with tinted windows, but did not have details about the make and model of the car.

The SUV may have front-end or right-front damage, police said. The vehicle was last seen at 1:17 p.m. Friday heading north on Colesville Road toward New Hampshire Avenue.

Police released an image of the car believed to be involved in the collision. However, the make and model of the car also is not clear in the photo.

The police department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the fatal collision. Detectives ask anyone with information about the incident to call the department’s non-emergency 24-hour line at 301-279-8000.

The incident was the second hit-and-run collision to occur in the county in less than three days.

On Wednesday, a pedestrian, Brian Roy Longaberger, 56, of an unknown address, was struck by a car on Muddy Branch Road near West Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg and was pronounced dead at the scene. The next day, Josue David Carranza Castellon, 26, of no fixed address, was arrested at Newark International Airport in New Jersey while trying to board a plane to Honduras, police said Friday in a press release.

Carranza Castellon is charged with manslaughter by vehicle and failure to remain at the scene of an accident resulting in death, according to police.

In addition, on Wednesday, a 45-year-old cyclist, Minh Q. Vu, of Silver Spring, died after a collision with a car on the ramp connecting Columbia Pike to New Hampshire Avenue in White Oak.

Earlier in the month, on June 8, a pedestrian, Irrael Lopez Garcia, 39, died after he was struck by a car on Veirs Mill Road in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, according to police.
