Montgomery County police identified Irrael Lopez Garcia as the 39-year-old man who died Monday after he was struck by a car on Veirs Mill Road in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, the department said Tuesday in a statement.

The collision occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Gail Street, police said. Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews responded following a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Investigators determined that Lopez Garcia, whose address is unknown, was in the road when he was struck by a silver 2009 Honda Civic traveling east on Veirs Mill Road, according to the statement. The speed limit for that section of Veirs Mill Road is 35 mph.

Lopez Garcia was pronounced dead, police said. The driver of the Honda remained at the scene.
