Police arrest Takoma Park man for attempted murder after stabbing incident

55-year-old man used ‘cutting instrument’ to injure other man after vehicle collision, police say

A 55-year-old man is facing attempted first-degree murder charges following an assault Monday morning in Takoma Park that left another man with stab wounds, the Takoma Park Police Department announced Wednesday morning.

Nebiyu Teklu G. Michael, of Takoma Park, now faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment related to the incident, the department said in a news release Wednesday. Police allege Michael used a “cutting instrument” during the assault.

Just after 11 a.m. on Monday, Takoma Park police officers responded to the intersection of Houston and Roanoke avenues for the report of an assault in progress, police said. Before the assault, police say there was a two-vehicle collision.

When officers arrived at the location, a residential area in Ward 5 with a mix of multifamily and garden-style apartment buildings and single-family homes, they found a 47-year-old man suffering from “severe lacerations to his head and neck,” the release said. The man was next to his car, but the other car in the collision was not present.

Officers provided life-saving measures to the man until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews arrived, police said. Those efforts included packing the man’s wounds with gauze and applying pressure to stop the bleeding.

MCFRS crews later transported the man to a local trauma center in critical condition, police said. There, he was stabilized and underwent emergency surgery.

While still at the scene on Monday, officers and detectives canvassed the neighborhood. The department’s Criminal Investigation Division investigated, police said.

The following day around 2 p.m., detectives conducted a follow-up investigation, police said. During the follow-up, detectives learned that the suspect’s car had returned to their residence and the suspect was preparing to leave the area.

Takoma Park and Montgomery County police officers then conducted surveillance of the residence and suspect and waited for him to operate the vehicle, the release said.

“Members of both agencies conducted a coordinated vehicle block to prevent the suspect from fleeing, and he was safely taken into custody without incident,” police said.

Upon his arrest the suspect, later identified as Michael, was transported to the Takoma Park Police Department, police said. At police station detectives interviewed Michael and executed a search and seizure warrant for his vehicle. During the search “items of evidentiary value” were recovered. The release did not provide details on what those items were.

Later, Michael was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville and was charged, police said.

Police continue to investigate the incident. The department is asking anyone with information to contact the department at 301-270-1100 and refer to case No. 260034967.
