Pedestrian dies after Gaithersburg hit-and-run collision
Wednesday morning incident occurred near Muddy Branch Road and West Diamond Avenue, police say

A pedestrian who was struck in a hit-and-run collision in Gaithersburg on Wednesday morning has died, according to Montgomery County police.
This collision occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on Muddy Branch Road near West Diamond Avenue, according to police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) radio transmissions. Officers and MCFRS crews were dispatched at 4:47 a.m. to the incident.

First responders found a man in “critical condition,” police said Wednesday morning in posts on social media. It is unclear whether the man was in the roadway or elsewhere after the collision.
The driver of the striking vehicle was not at the scene when first responders arrived, police said.

According to a MCFRS radio dispatch, the injured man was quickly determined to be in cardiac arrest and CPR was initiated. MCFRS crews transported the man to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said on social media.
Just after 5:50 a.m. county police announced via social media that the man had died.
Following the collision, Muddy Branch Road was closed to traffic for several hours as first responders worked at the scene and police investigated. Around 10:40 a.m., the Gaithersburg Police Department announced on social media that the roads reopened.
Based on a preliminary investigation, police said the striking vehicle was an “older model” Honda CR-V. Police said the vehicle was possibly dark gray with red accents and had damage to the front left side.

“The vehicle was last seen traveling on Muddy Branch Rd. toward West Diamond Ave.,” police said.
No other details about the incident were provided and police did not identify the man who died.
The area where the collision occurred is mostly residential with garden-style apartments and some office and commercial buildings. The Washington Suburban Sanitation Commission’s Gaithersburg Depot is near the intersection of Muddy Branch Road and West Diamond Avenue.
This is the second fatal pedestrian collision to occur in Montgomery County in less than two weeks. Irrael Lopez Garcia, 39, died after he was struck by a car June 8 on Veirs Mill Road in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, according to police.
