Maryland State Police are looking for the driver who was involved in a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run collision Thursday night on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway near Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase, the department said Friday morning in a news release.

Police have not been able to positively identify the man, the release said.

The collision occurred shortly before 10 p.m. on the outer loop of I-495, east of Connecticut Avenue, according to police. State troopers, Montgomery County police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews responded to the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation of the incident determined that there was a work van belonging to the man who died parked on the left shoulder of the inner loop, the release said. Police said they believe the man attempted to cross the Beltway’s outer loop travel lanes when he was hit.

Police said that investigators believe the man was carrying a gas can with him when he was struck.

The initial vehicle that struck the man did not remain at the scene, according to police. The man was also struck by a second vehicle, and the driver of that vehicle remained at the scene.

State police are asking the public for help in locating the driver and vehicle that fled the scene. The vehicle is believed to be a silver or grey sedan with “heavy front-end damage,” the release said.
