One man dead, seven children injured in Germantown rollover collision

Police investigating who was driving second vehicle, no adult was with juveniles

One man is dead and seven children between the ages of 12 and 15 are injured after a two-car collision in Germantown Tuesday morning, according to social media posts from a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) spokesperson and county police.  

MCFRS crews were dispatched to the intersection of Clopper Road and Great Seneca Highway for the collision at roughly 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer. Piringer said on social media that the incident involved entrapment, an overturned vehicle on fire and at least seven patients. 

At about 9 a.m., police said on social media that the incident was a two-vehicle collision with a total of eight people involved. One adult man was confirmed dead on scene, with seven minors from the ages of 12 to 15 transported to area hospitals.  

Piringer said on social media that there were three priority one patients, two priority two trauma patients and two priority three patients with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to state protocols, a priority one patient is a critically injured person who needs immediate attention or someone with a life-threatening injury or illness. Priority two is a less serious condition, but still a potentially life-threatening injury and priority three is a non-emergent condition that needs medical attention, but not on an emergency basis.   

Piringer said dozens of first responders, including five ambulances, five medic units, four fire engines, three extrication units, three EMS duty officers and several command/chief officers we operating at the scene. 

Police said in a statement to Bethesda Today that investigators are working to determine who was driving. There was not an adult in the car with the children, and none of the juveniles were old enough to have a license, police said. 

The collision also resulted in the prolonged closure of the intersection of the two roads, which reopened at roughly 11:30 a.m.
