Man dies three weeks after being hit by car in Gaithersburg

Tesfaye Fugago Liranso, 67, of Gaithersburg died Saturday, more than three weeks after he was struck by a Toyota RAV4 in Gaithersburg, according to a Tuesday news release from the Montgomery County police.
The police department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the incident, which occurred July 24 around 2:34 p.m. in the area of West Deer Park Road near Hermosa Place, according to the release.
The area where the collision occurred is a residential neighborhood with garden-style apartment buildings and townhouses. The speed limit on the roadway is 25 mph.
According to the news release, when Gaithersburg City police officers arrived, they found Liranso suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to an area hospital by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews in critical condition. He died at the hospital on Saturday, county police said.

According to county police, the driver of the 2018 Toyota RAV4 was traveling westbound on West Deer Park Road and Liranso was struck by the vehicle when he entered the westbound travel lane.
It is unclear why Liranso entered the travel lane. However, county police said investigators believe Liranso may have been experiencing a medical emergency.
According to county police, the driver of the RAV4 remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Collision investigations can take months to complete, according to county police. The Tuesday release did not say whether any charges have been filed against the driver.
