A 39-year-old man died after being struck by a vehicle on Veirs Mill Road in the Wheaton-Glenmont area early Monday, Montgomery County police said Monday morning in a news release.

The collision occurred shortly after 2 a.m. near the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Gail Street, police said. Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service crews responded following a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Upon arrival, first responders found the man lying on Veirs Mills Road, police said. The man was pronounced dead.

The striking vehicle remained at the scene, according to police. No additional details about the collision were provided. The man’s identity is expected to be released following notification of the next of kin, police said.

Police initially said on social media that the pedestrian was riding an electric scooter at the time of the collision. However, police later said an investigation determined the man was not on a scooter at the time of the collision, the release said.

Following the collision, Veirs Mill Road between Claridge Road and Connecticut Avenue was closed to traffic. The roadway has since reopened, police said Monday morning in a social media post.

The police department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the fatal collision.
