The hot embers of a hookah pipe that was left outside on the rear patio of a Fairland townhome likely sparked a fire Sunday evening that displaced at least four adults, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) officials.

The blaze resulted in about $135,000 of damage to the townhome in the 3900 block of Bryant Park Circle, spokesperson Pete Piringer said Sunday on social media. A neighboring townhome also sustained some damage from the fire.

The townhomes are across from the Fairland Recreational Park and several sports fields.

Around 5:20 p.m., county firefighters were dispatched to the townhome development off of Greencastle Road for a reported fire, Piringer said on social media. Responding crews located a fire engulfing a deck and extending into a residence in the center of the row of townhouses.

According to Piringer, one resident who uses a wheelchair was assisted out of the townhome by firefighters.

The fire was extinguished about an hour after crews had been dispatched, according to Piringer’s social media posts. The blaze was primarily confined to the townhouse where the fire originated, but a neighboring townhome incurred some “collateral damage,” he said.

Later Sunday evening, Piringer posted an update, saying the cause of the fire appeared to be accidental and was determined to have involved a hookah smoking pipe that had been used earlier in the day.

Piringer noted burn patterns on the townhome deck “suggest [the] pipe fell over or wind scattered hot embers.”
