High temperatures cause changes to MoCo Independence Day events

This holiday weekend is going to be a hot one, with the National Weather Service forecasting daytime temperatures to reach the upper 90s and lower 100s every day through Sunday, with “feels like” temperatures estimated to range as much as 110 degrees. The National Weather Service has already issued an extreme heat warning for Friday, as well as an extreme heat watch issued for Saturday lasting from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. both days.
Due to the extreme heat, the county announced Wednesday plans to shift its fireworks shows at Albert Einstein High School in Kensington on Friday and at the South Germantown Recreational Park on Saturday from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
“We anticipate that the temperatures — while it will be uncomfortable and absolutely will be hot — they won’t reach those same dangerous levels that they will during the course of the entire day,” Gabe Albornoz, Montgomery County recreation director, said yesterday.
Unless weather conditions change significantly, Albornoz said, the shows will go on this year.

County health officials are also urging residents to take the heat seriously.
“Extreme heat can become life-threatening very quickly,” Dr. Kisha Davis, Montgomery County health officer, said Monday in a press release. “As residents prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, I encourage everyone to stay hydrated and limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day.”

Registration for the parade begins at 9 a.m. and the parade will step-off at 10 a.m. from the church at 20020 Montgomery Village Avenue and proceed along Apple Ridge Road. The parade will feature fire engines, community groups and anyone who wants to participate. The best entry overall wins a trophy.
Due to the forecasted heat, the scheduled celebration after the parade has been canceled.
Gaithersburg

Kensington
Montgomery County 250th: Shine Together
Friday, July 3, 7:30 p.m.
Albert Einstein High School

Montgomery County 250th: Shine Together will start 30 minutes later than originally scheduled due to the heat. The event will include live music from The Nighthawks and fireworks beginning at about 9:15 p.m. Food will be available for purchase.
Parking on site is limited to people with disabilities. There will be free parking and shuttle service at Westfield Wheaton (11160 Veirs Mill Road, Wheaton). Lawn chairs, blankets and coolers, but alcoholic beverages and pets are not permitted.
Olney
Friday approximately 9:30 p.m.
OBGC Cropdusters Fastballs & Fireworks
4501 Olney Laytonsville Road, Olney
Cost: $15 per vehicle (plus tax)
The Olney Boys and Girls Club (OBGC) is hosting an annual Fastballs & Fireworks night at First Responder Field at ServPro Stadium. Tickets for the baseball game are sold out, but there are a limited number of fireworks viewing passes available. You can watch the fireworks from your vehicle or from a designated viewing area. Fireworks are expected to begin around 9:30 p.m.
Kensington Fourth of July Bike Parade
Saturday 9:45 a.m. line up, 10 a.m. step-off
Starting Location: Saint Paul Park
10564 Saint Paul St., Kensington
Everyone is invited to decorate your bikes, wagons, scooters, or anything on wheels and follow a Kensington Volunteer Fire Department fire truck as it leads the parade along Lexington Street, Farragut Avenue and St. Paul Street.
Takoma Park
Parade: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Street Party: 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
The city of Takoma Park is holding their 137th annual 4th of July Celebration with the theme: “Celebrating the People of Takoma Park: Elders, History, and the Democratic Spirit.”
There will be a parade on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. through downtown Takoma Park.
In the evening, there will be a street party from 6 to 9 p.m. in downtown Takoma Park on Maple Avenue between Philadelphia and Ritchie avenues. This event will feature food trucks, beer and wine garden, kids activities, and live music from the Takoma Park Community Band and local band Oh He Dead.
Regarding the weather, the town says that they will make every effort to hold events if it is possible to safely do so, and updates will be posted to their website immediately.
Bethesda

Black’s Bar & Kitchen in Bethesda is having a backyard BBQ buffet menu. For $50 per person, enjoy burgers, hot dogs, a whole roasted pig, grilled oysters, and sides.
Rockville
Saturday 7 – 10 p.m.
Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park[Text Wrapping Break]1800 Piccard Drive, Rockville
Live music from Run for Cover will open the event at 7 p.m. followed by a greeting from the mayor and council, national anthem performance by the Victorian Lyric Opera Company and then more music from Run for Cover. The night will end with a 20 minute firework display at around 9:15 p.m.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase and free parking will be available in lots on Gaither and Shady Grove roads and Piccard Drive.
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and prepared food and drinks, but outside alcohol and barbecuing are not allowed.
Germantown
Germantown Glory
Saturday, July 4, 7:30 p.m.
South Germantown Recreational Park

TFC band opens the event with fireworks starting around 9:15 p.m. Food vendors will be available. Lawn chairs, blankets and coolers are allowed, but alcoholic beverages and pets are not permitted. Parking will be available on-site.
Due to the extreme heat, the event start time has shifted from 7 to 7:30 p.m.
Poolesville
Sunday 5 p.m.
15598 Hughes Road, Poolesville
Parking cost: $10 (in cash)
The Upper Montgomery County Volunteer Department, in conjunction with the Town of Poolesville, is hosting a fireworks celebration. There will be food trucks, as well as live music from Special Delivery. Alcohol and pets are prohibited at this event.
This event, originally scheduled for Saturday was moved to Sunday due to projected thunderstorms.
