A driver who died after his vehicle and a Ride On bus collided early Friday morning has been identified as Alexander Junior Norris, 59, of Gaithersburg, Montgomery County police said Monday in a news release.
The collision was the first of two fatal vehicle collisions in the county on Friday. Hours after the Gaithersburg incident, a 72-year-old man died after he was struck by a vehicle driven by a family member in the driveway of a townhome community in Germantown, according to police.
The Friday collision involving a Ride On bus occurred around 4:45 a.m. at the intersection of Midcounty Highway and Woodfield Road, the Monday news release said. Police initially reported the collision occurred where the highway intersects Goshen Road, 1.8 miles away.
Shortly after the collision, county police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews were dispatched to the intersection of Midcounty Highway and Woodfield Road for the report of a vehicle collision with a Ride On bus, the release said.

Upon arrival, first responders located Norris with serious injuries, police said. MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer said Friday on social media that the collision involved entrapment.
Norris was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders attempted life-saving efforts, according to police. A woman who was a passenger in the green 2013 Kia Soul driven by Norris was also injured in the collision and was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The driver of the Ride One bus was not injured, and no passengers were on the bus at the time of the collision, police said. The bus driver was not identified by police.
A preliminary investigation determined the Ride On bus was traveling westbound on Midcounty Highway when it collided with the Kia Soul, which was traveling southbound on Woodfield Road, according to the release. Police are investigating why the collision occurred, according to the release.

According to the police, the traffic signals at the intersection were in “nighttime flash mode.” This means the traffic signals were either flashing red lights to signal a stop at the intersection, or yellow lights to signal drivers should slow down and use caution at the intersection.
Police investigators ask anyone with information about the collision to contact the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
