    The Game of Love

Meaningful compliments inspired a Germantown couple to create an uplifting deck of cards

Whether in the grocery store or the family room, Natalie Star, 42, says she and her husband, Philip Herbert, 46, enjoy sharing words of affirmation. “We just love how compliments make people feel,” Star says.

To spread the love, the Germantown couple created I See You, a 50-card deck of prompts to spark a meaningful compliment. More than just “nice shoes” or “I like your hair,” the cards feature phrases such as “A moment that made me proud of you…” and players finish the sentence. Star says any size group can enjoy the deck, which comes with directions for spotlighting one individual for a birthday or milestone. The game also can be tailored for solo play with mirror affirmations.

Star says she and Herbert are serial entrepreneurs. Their other releases include The Black Pack, a standard 52-card deck with iconic African Americans such as Gladys Knight and John Legend, and other card games in partnership with comedian Martin Lawrence.

The I See You game launched in March and costs $26.99. It’s available at iseeyouniverse.com. “This game is not Black, white, young, old,” says Star, who grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Magruder High School in Rockville. “It’s for everyone.”
