A co-founder and former guitarist of Baltimore-based rock band Turnstile was charged with attempted second-degree murder Tuesday after he allegedly hit his bandmate’s father with his car Sunday in Silver Spring, according to Montgomery County police and court documents.

Brady O’Brien Ebert, 33, of Silver Spring, who left the band in 2022 according to Pitchfork, is being held without bond in the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit in Rockville, police said Thursday in a statement. According to online court records, Ebert is represented by Andre Alpert of law firm Albert Schreyer. Alpert didn’t respond Thursday to a phone call request for comment.

According to police and charging documents, county police officers responded to the 15000 block of Timberlake Drive at roughly 4:45 p.m. Sunday for the report of a hit-and-run collision. Responding officers found 78-year-old William Yates, father of lead Turnstile vocalist Brendan Yates, in his front yard with trauma to his legs.

Yates’ family told officers that Ebert, a “neighbor and past friend” of the family, allegedly pulled up to the Yates’ house and began honking his horn and yelling obscenities, according to charging documents.

Yates told police that Ebert was a member of the band with his son before he was removed from the band and allegedly “has been causing issues with the Yates family,” according to charging documents. On two occasions prior to Sunday, Yates told officers after the Sunday incident that Ebert had driven up to him to yell obscenities, according to charging documents.

On Sunday, according to charging documents, Yates saw Ebert driving toward his home from around a corner, so he grabbed a rock and ran to his daughter, who was getting her children into the car, to warn them.

Surveillance footage shows Ebert turning a corner and then swerving toward Yates as he reaches the bottom of the driveway to warn his daughter, according to the charging documents. Yates throws the rock and hits Ebert’s car while his daughter grabs her 3-year-old son to avoid being struck by Ebert’s car, according to the charging documents.

In the video, after the daughter pleads for Ebert to stop, Ebert allegedly reverses his car toward Yates, who is walking along his driveway, according to charging documents. Ebert then allegedly accelerates quickly, making a sharp left turn into the driveway, and strikes Yates.

Ebert then allegedly continues driving onto the lawn toward Yates’ daughter and her son. He then crosses the driveway and drives across the other side of the lawn to flee the area.

Yates told police, according to the charging documents, that Ebert had been “taunting them” and he saw Ebert driving toward him but could not move out of the way.

As Yates lay on the ground waiting for police and emergency responders to arrive, Ebert returned and began to yell at Yates that he “deserved it” before fleeing again, the charging documents said.

According to police, Ebert left without contacting 911 or providing aid. Yates was transported by county emergency crews to a local hospital with serious injuries including a broken leg.

Officers searched for Ebert and 2001 Buick and found it with “front-end damage in the 15000 block of Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville,” according to the police statement. Police obtained an arrest warrant for Ebert and took him into custody Tuesday after locating him in his neighborhood.
