Flood watch, strong storms possible in DC area Wednesday as vicious weather continues

The D.C. region could see another round of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday

A flood watch is in effect through in the morning, with the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch starting at 4 a.m. Wednesday as a warm front moves back to the region, bringing higher humidity and increasing the chance for heavy rain.

By Wednesday afternoon, a few breaks in the clouds could allow temperatures to climb into the low to upper 80s. That additional sunshine could also make the atmosphere more unstable, increasing the chance for showers and thunderstorms later in the day.

7News First Alert Chief Meteorologist Veronica Johnson said strong thunderstorms are possible after 5 p.m.

Meteorologists also warn some storms could produce heavy downpours, which may cause localized flooding on low-lying roads and in poor drainage areas.

The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue through the rest of the week.

Thursday will be partly cloudy and hotter, with highs between 89 and 93 degrees. Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible by the evening as the stalled weather system begins moving offshore. This shift could also increase the risk for severe storms.

Friday will bring another hot and humid day, with highs reaching the upper 80s to mid-90s. Pop-up afternoon thunderstorms are again possible, with some capable of producing heavy rain, frequent lightning and gusty winds.

Johnson advised drivers never to attempt to drive through a flooded roadway and allow extra time for the Wednesday morning commute.

Moderate to heavy rain will continue to fall across our region for the next several hours. Heavy rain in the predawn hours has saturated the ground, and flash flooding is possible for the rest of the morning. Rain will diminish before noon, with a risk of thunderstorms this afternoon. A front will remain stalled across the area for the next several days, and there will be a chance of rain and severe storms into the weekend.
