A woman died and her passenger was injured Monday evening after the SUV she was driving struck a cable barricade in a parking garage in Rockville, Montgomery County police said Tuesday in a statement.

Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded at about 5:30 p.m. to the garage in the 11300 block of Woodglen Drive for a report of a single-vehicle collision, police said.

According to MCFRS radio transmissions, the location is the garage near Whole Foods at 11355 Woodglen Drive.

According to the statement, a Toyota RAV4 driven by the woman appeared to have struck the cable barricade within the parking garage entrance area “for reasons that remain under investigation.”

The woman was pronounced dead on scene. A man who was a passenger in the SUV suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by MCFRS crews to a local hospital, police said. Neither was identified.

According to MCFRS radio transmissions, the 75-year-old man was transported to Suburban Hospital in Bethesda as a priority 2 patient, defined by Maryland EMS protocols as someone with “less serious condition yet potentially life-threatening injury or illness, requiring emergency medical attention but not immediately endangering the patient’s life.”

In the radio report to the hospital, the first responder described the collision as “low impact” with “moderate front-end damage to the vehicle.”

The collision is under investigation by the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit. Police said more information would be released, including the woman’s identity, following the proper notification of the next of kin.
