Cyclist hospitalized following collision with vehicle in Damascus

A helicopter transported the man to an area hospital, according to first responder radio transmissions

A man suffered life-threatening injuries following a collision involving the bicycle he was riding and a vehicle in Damascus on Monday afternoon, according to Montgomery County police.

The collision occurred just before 2 p.m. at the intersection of Damascus Road and Mullinix Mill Road, police said in a social media post. Police did not identify the man.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) radio transmissions, a medical evacuation helicopter was dispatched to the scene to transport the injured cyclist to an area hospital. It is unclear which hospital he was taken to.

First responders initially categorized the man as priority 1 with multisystem trauma, according to radio transmissions. Maryland protocols define a priority 1 patient as a “critically ill or injured person requiring immediate attention; unstable patients with life-threatening injury or illness.”

County police were dispatched to the incident at 1:54 p.m., police said on social media. The striking vehicle remained at the scene of the collision, according to police.

Several roadways near where the collision occurred, including Long Corner Road at Mullinix Mill Road and Damascus Road at Riva Road, remained closed hours after the incident.

Police advise drivers in the area to seek alternative routes and expect significant delays.

A spokesperson for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service did not immediately respond to Bethesda Today’s request for comment Monday afternoon.

The area where the collision occurred is rural and mostly surrounded by farmland. The Damascus Grace Fellowship Seventh-day Adventist Church is nearby. The helicopter landed in a field, according to MCFRS radio transmissions.
