A cyclist who was struck by a car Tuesday night in Silver Spring died Wednesday morning of injuries he sustained in the collision, Montgomery County police said Wednesday afternoon in a statement.

County police did not identify the man and said the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating the collision, which occurred in the White Oak neighborhood.

The collision occurred around 9:40 p.m. on the ramp connecting Columbia Pike to New Hampshire Avenue, according to the statement. Officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS) crews responded following a report of a collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle.

A preliminary investigation found the cyclist was struck on the ramp by a white Lexus ES that was traveling northbound from Columbia Pike toward New Hampshire Avenue, police said.

After the collision, the driver of the Lexus left the scene, then returned a “short time later,” police said.

MCFRS crews transported the cyclist to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police and MCFRS spokesperson Pete Piringer. On Wednesday morning, the cyclist succumbed to his injuries.

After the collision, New Hampshire Avenue was closed to traffic from Milestone Drive to Lockwood Drive, Piringer said Wednesday morning on social media. It was unclear on Wednesday when the road reopened.

The cyclist is the second person in less than 24 hours to die after being struck by a vehicle on a road in the county. On Wednesday morning, a pedestrian died in a hit-and-run collision on Muddle Branch Road in Gaithersburg.

On June 8, another pedestrian, Irrael Lopez Garcia, 39, died after he was struck by a car on Veirs Mill Road in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, according to police.

More information about the Tuesday night collision, including the cyclist’s identity, will be released following the proper notification of the next of kin, police said.

Generally, investigations into collisions take several weeks or months to complete and to determine if charges will be filed against the driver, according to police.
