“Take Me Home, Country Roads,” a song inspired by rural roads in Montgomery County, was adopted by the U.S. men’s national soccer team at the FIFA World Cup. Bill Danoff, one of the writers who helped pen the song, told NBC 4 that seeing the team and stadiums of fans belting out the lyrics at games is “outrageous” and “really cool.”  [NBC 4]

D.C. woman convicted of stealing more than $400K from Silver Spring man she dated

On Monday, a Montgomery County jury convicted Janey Sears, 72, of Washington, D.C., of stealing nearly $407,000 from a Silver Spring man whom she met on an online dating site. Sears tricked the man with an investment scheme, keeping the money he intended to use to purchase stock for herself to spend at casinos and a sports car. [WJLA]

Police arrest Gaithersburg man who allegedly brandished gun in restaurant

A man who allegedly intimidated employees and brandished a gun at a restaurant in Gaithersburg was arrested and charged by Gaithersburg police after the July 5 incident. The 29-year-old man allegedly had more than $8,000 in cash, prescription narcotics and a stolen handgun in his possession at the time of his arrest. [Montgomery Community Media]
