U.S. Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) on Friday announced she is backing Will Jawando for Montgomery County executive, making her the first member of the county’s federal delegation to weigh in on the race.
“Will has been a friend for many years, but more importantly, he is the kind of leader we need right now,” Alsobrooks wrote in a Friday press release from Jawando’s campaign. “Will is someone who knows how to fight, win, and deliver for working families.”
Jawando is one of five candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for county executive in the June 23 primary election. His opponents include fellow councilmembers Andrew Friedson (D-Dist. 1) and Evan Glass (D-At-large) as well as Gaithersburg businessman Peter James and Mithun Banerjee, a landlord from Silver Spring.
Two candidates are competing for the Republican nomination — Friendship Heights attorney Shelly Skolnick and Esther Wells, a certified public accountant from Montgomery Village. The winners of the Democratic and Republican primaries will advance to the Nov. 3 general election.

Alsobrooks, who served six years as executive for Prince George’s County, made history in November 2024 when she won election as Maryland’s first Black U.S. Senator, beating former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan.
Jawando in May 2023 was the first candidate to announce a run for the U.S. Senate seat left open by Democrat Ben Cardin, who retired after three terms. Jawando dropped out of the race in October and endorsed Alsobrooks days later.
Jawando recently reflected on his decision to drop out of the Senate race during an April 22 forum hosted by the multi-faith community organization Action in Montgomery.

“I thought I was the right person, the right progressive, the right message at the time when Senator Cardin retired,” Jawando said during the forum. “But as the race went on, I saw that if I really wanted us to move forward and to get someone who shared my values into the seat, I needed to step back and I needed to support Angela Alsobrooks.”
Bethesda Today on Monday independently confirmed Alsobrooks’ endorsement of Jawando. Other members of Montgomery County’s federal delegation — U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and U.S. Reps. Glenn Ivey (D-Dist. 4), April McClain Delaney (D-Dist. 6) and Jamie Raskin (D-Dist. 8) — have yet to announce endorsements for county executive.
