When it comes to things to do each week, there’s no place quite like Montgomery County. The region is a hub for activities of all sorts, from art exhibits and theater to craft fairs, food festivals, and inventive workshops. Yet with all the happenings across the area, it can be a challenge to figure out exactly which things to do. To get started, below are our top picks for the week, and here is an events calendar for things to do in August.
7-10 p.m.
Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda

Strathmore’s annual free summer concert series wraps up Wednesday with the UkeFest Finale. The evening begins with a ukulele strum-along at 7 p.m. and attendees are encouraged to bring ukuleles to play. At 7:30 p.m. the performance begins with festival teaching artists Cathy Fink, Marcy Marxer, Herb Ohta Jr., Neal Chin, Lisa Webb, Bob Tigert, Maureen Andary and Ben Hassenger. Guests are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs and food will be available for purchase. Attendees can also bring their own food. A $5 donation is suggested and RSVPs are encouraged.

Rockville’s free Movies in the Parks series continues with “Freakier Friday” at Fallsgrove Park. The series features a different movie at a different Rockville park every Thursday through Aug. 20. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs, blankets, food and nonalcohol beverages. All movies are rated G or PG. In the event of inclement weather, films will be shown at the Rockville Senior Center.
Friday-Aug. 22: Montgomery County Agricultural Fair

“Born in the USA” is the theme of this year’s fair, which features carnival rides and games, farm animals, craft and hobby contests, and grandstand entertainment that includes monster truck, rodeo and demolition derby shows.

Tickets: $17.15 online through Monday, $18 at the gate, $20.24 online Tuesday-Aug. 22. Admission is free for children age 11 and younger.
Friday-Sept. 11: Rockville Summer Concert Series
6-9 p.m.
Rockville Town Square, 36 Maryland Ave., Rockville
Rockville’s Town Square free summer concert series continues with the Joe Falero Band, led by Puerto Rican-born percussionist Joe Falero, performing Latin music with Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
6-8:30 p.m.
Cabin John Regional Park, 7400 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda
Cabin John Regional Park becomes a comedy club for this free event, featuring a lineup of local comedians from Improbable Comedy, plus food trucks and local craft beers. Bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Recommended for age 17 and older.
Friday-Sept. 11: Lakefront Live Summer Concerts
6-9 p.m.
Rio Lakefront, Broadway Stage, 9841 Washingtonian Blvd., Gaithersburg
Lakefront Live returns to the Broadway Stage as part of Rio’s Red, White & Rio celebration of America 250. The free summer concert series features live music every Friday, highlighting a variety of genres including rock, country, salsa, funk, soul and disco. This week, Mac Heat will perform a mix of soul, blues and R&B.
9:30 p.m.–1 a.m.
Observatory Park, 100 Desellum Ave., Gaithersburg
Come for the science fiction and stay for the real science at Observatory Park in Gaithersburg. The night starts with a screening of Project Hail Mary. After the movie, stay to observe the Perseids meteor shower, the best of the year, according to NASA. Attendance is free.
Sunday: Hey Cousin Culture Fest
1-8 p.m.
Veterans Plaza, 1 Veterans Place, Silver Spring
Local bands and musicians, dance teams and a DJ provide entertainment at this free event celebrating the Black diaspora. The family friendly festival also features a market selling art, crafts, apparel and food at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring.
