A 13-year-old boy was arrested and charged with attempted murder following a stabbing Wednesday night that injured a 15-year-old near a Safeway store on Redland Boulevard in Rockville, Rockville City police Deputy Chief Barry Dufek said Thursday.
Dufek told Bethesda Today on Thursday morning that Rockville police believe there is a second suspect for whom officers had “been searching for throughout the night” and who remains at large. In a Wednesday night press release, Rockville police did not identify the 13-year-old who was arrested.
The Rockville incident occurred one day after a 14-year-old boy was stabbed while getting off a bus on Tuesday evening in Clarksburg. A 16-year-old boy was taken into custody by Montgomery County police after that incident and an investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday shortly after 8:30 p.m., Rockville and county police officers responded to the 400 block of Redland Boulevard for a reported stabbing, according to the Rockville police department’s release. Responding officers located a 15-year-old victim who had been stabbed “multiple times,” Dufek said.

The teen suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital “in stable condition,” Dufek said.
Officers at the scene took the 13-year-old into custody following a brief foot chase, according to Dufek. The chase ended near the Shady Grove Metro Station, he said.
A knife was also recovered after the incident, Montgomery County police said in a social media post Wednesday night.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, the 13-year-old faces charges of first- and second-degree assault and other weapons-related charges, the release said.

Regarding other juvenile-related stabbings in the county, Dufek said he has not seen a trend or an uptick in such incidents in Rockville. However, he has been tracking similar incidents in the region.
According to Dufek, Rockville police are “collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to see if there are any trends and see if we can work together to reduce this type of crime.”
